Kandiyohi County passes local option sales tax

The Kandiyohi County Board Tuesday approved a half-cent local option sales tax to pay for transportation projects. The tax is estimated to raise about 13 million dollars over 4 years to pay for 4 different transportation projects in the county.

The additional half cent tax will begin to be added to purchases in Kandiyohi County beginning April 1st of next year. After the projects are complete, the tax would disappear.

The extra funds would pay for an overpass on County Road 55 in southwest Willmar, improvements at the intersection of Highways 23 and 9 at the New London Country Stop, and it would also fill some weight restriction gaps on County Road 44, and correct some unexpected sharp curves on County Road 40.

Kandiyohi County Public Works Director Mel Odens says a local option sales tax makes everyone who uses the roads in the county, whether or not they live here, help pay for their upkeep.
