Man disposed of dead dog in Point Lake, fined

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department says they think they’ve solved the mystery of a dead dog found floating in Point Lake tied to an anchor.

It appears to be a case of a person disposing of his deceased pet in a place the dog loved to go when it was alive. Sheriff Dan Hartog says after word of the adult female Springer Spaniel being found in the lake north of Willmar on August 1st, they received two anonymous tips about a person euthanizing their dog because it had been suffering from a serious illness.

Detectives followed up on the tips and spoke to a person who admitted the dog had been put to sleep and put in Point Lake because that was where the owner had taken the pet many times to swim and fish. An examination of the dog’s body failed to show a positive sign of death, but there were no signs of trauma.

The dog owner was fined $190 for the petty misdemeanor offense of illegal disposal of an animal’s body in a lake. The owner’s name has not been released.
