UNDATED (AP) – Seventh seeds South Carolina and Michigan provided the biggest surprises in yesterday’s NCAA Tournament action. Sindarius Thornwell pumped in 24 points and the Gamecocks erased a double-digit deficit in the second half to knock out Duke, 88-81. Moe Wagner scored a career-high 26 points and helped the Wolverines turn a 45-36 deficit into a 73-69 win over Louisville.

UNDATED (AP) – Top seeds North Carolina and Kansas have advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Josh Jackson contributed 14 of his 23 points in the second half as the Jayhawks rolled to a 90-70 romp over Michigan State. Kennedy Meeks finished with 16 points to help the Tar Heels dispose of Arkansas, 72-65.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Ryan Newman won yesterday’s Monster Engery Cup race at Phoenix by skipping a tire-changing pit stop to take the lead from deep in the pack. He held on for the final two laps to break a 127-race winless streak and force Kyle Larson to settle for his third straight runner-up finish. Newman also halted a 112-race losing skid for Richard Childress Racing.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) – Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is still four to five weeks away from playing in a game as he deals with shoulder inflammation. Kipnis received a second opinion on his shoulder and has been cleared to resume a strengthening program in a week. The Indians also say pitcher Cody Anderson will undergo Tommy John surgery that will cause him to miss the entire season.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Marc Leishman rallied to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and earn a spot in the Masters next month. The Australian went ahead by sinking a 50-foot eagle putt on 16 before closing with two tough pars to complete a one-stroke win over Kevin Kisner and Charley Hoffman. Leishman shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday for an 11-under total.
