Human remains found in rubble of Sleepy Eye-area home fire

Remains recovered following a house fire in rural Brown County have been taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner for official determination on an identity and a cause of death.

Emergency crews were called to the home at 26260 260th Street north of Sleepy Eye just after 8 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, the first responders found the house to be fully engulfed.

A witness, 56-year-old Steven Remus, was taken by ambulance to the Sleepy Eye Medical Center where he was treated for smoke exposure, then released.

The house collapsed as a result of the blaze. Human remains were uncovered from the rubble.

The incident is currently under active investigation by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
